Yes, but shikibutons are intentionally thin and firm. The Cotton model provides very little cushioning and is best suited to sleepers who specifically prefer a very firm surface. For greater cushioning and pressure relief, the Latex Shikibuton is the better choice for most everyday sleepers.

Yes, a Shikibuton can be placed directly on the floor while sleeping, but it should not remain there continuously. A solid floor prevents airflow underneath and can trap moisture in the cotton. The mattress should be rolled daily and aired so that both the mattress and floor can dry completely.

Nothing is required. You can use a Shikibuton directly on the floor. Using a Tatami mat or something similar is not enough to satisfy the airflow requirements.

We do not recommend it. Cotton naturally absorbs moisture from the body and surrounding air. Leaving a Japanese floor mattress against a solid floor for extended periods can prevent that moisture from escaping. Regular airing is an important part of proper care.

Tufting helps hold the cotton, foam and wool securely together and reduces movement of the internal materials. We use nylon tufts to help maintain the construction as the mattress is sat on, slept on and folded over time.

Yes. We use pure cotton batting without added fillers or treatments. Depending on the model, the cotton is combined with high-density foam, latex or memory foam to create the finished mattress.

Our futon mattresses use a wool wrap for natural fire resistance. This allows the finished mattress to meet Canadian flammability requirements without an additional fire-retardants.

Always use your futon on a breathable, slatted surface and rotate it regularly to encourage even wear and cotton compression. Futons can also be rolled and pounded out.
