Understanding the Natural Smell of Latex Mattresses

Yes. If you've never owned a latex mattress before, you may notice a distinctive smell when it first arrives. Natural latex has its own characteristic scent, and it can be more noticeable when a mattress, topper or pillow is new.

The important distinction is where that smell comes from. The natural scent of latex shouldn't automatically be confused with the chemical odour commonly referred to as mattress "off-gassing."

What Does Natural Latex Smell Like?

People describe natural latex in different ways. Common descriptions include rubbery, slightly sweet or even somewhat vanilla-like.

The smell comes from the latex material itself. Because natural latex is made using rubber harvested from rubber trees, it shouldn't be surprising that the finished foam retains a recognizable rubber scent.

How noticeable that scent is varies from person to person. Someone with a particularly sensitive sense of smell may notice it immediately, while another person may barely notice it at all.

Is the Smell of Latex Normal?

Yes. A mild latex smell is completely normal for a new natural latex mattress, topper or pillow.

It can be particularly noticeable when you first open the product because the latex has been enclosed in packaging. Once unpacked, fresh air can circulate around the mattress and the initial scent generally becomes less noticeable.

Different pieces of latex can also smell somewhat different. Natural materials aren't always perfectly identical from one production run to another, so the strength and character of the scent can vary.

Is Latex Smell the Same as Off-Gassing?

Not necessarily.

"Off-gassing" is commonly used to describe volatile compounds being released from newly manufactured products. Mattresses made from polyurethane and memory foam are often associated with a noticeable new-foam or chemical smell when first unpacked.

Natural latex has an inherent material scent. Being able to smell a material doesn't, by itself, mean that it is undergoing the same type of off-gassing associated with conventional synthetic foams.

This distinction is particularly important for people shopping for a natural mattress. A natural material doesn't have to be completely odourless to be natural.

How Long Does the Latex Smell Last?

The strongest scent is generally experienced when the latex is new. With exposure to fresh air, it gradually becomes less noticeable.

There isn't a specific number of days that applies to every mattress. The type of latex, amount of latex in the mattress, ventilation in the room and an individual's sensitivity to smells can all affect how long the scent remains noticeable.

Even after the initial smell has faded, the latex itself may retain a mild characteristic scent. If you unzip a mattress and smell the latex directly, for example, you may still be able to detect it.

That's different from being able to smell the mattress while sleeping on it. Once the latex is enclosed inside a mattress cover, a fitted sheet and normal bedding are added, most people find the scent much less noticeable during everyday use.

Do Dunlop and Talalay Latex Smell Different?

They can.

Dunlop and Talalay use different manufacturing processes, and latex can also be made with different proportions of natural and synthetic rubber. These differences can affect the scent of the finished material.

Even within the same general type of latex, there can be some variation from batch to batch. For that reason, it's difficult to say exactly how strong a particular piece of latex will smell before it is unpacked.

How Can You Reduce the Smell of a New Latex Mattress?

The simplest solution is fresh air and time.

After receiving a new latex mattress, remove its shipping packaging and allow it to breathe in a well-ventilated room. Normal airflow will help the initial concentrated scent dissipate.

You generally don't need to apply fragrances, sprays or cleaning products to mask the smell. Adding another scent can simply cover the natural latex smell rather than helping it dissipate.

If you're particularly sensitive to odours, giving the mattress additional time to air before adding all of your bedding may make the transition easier.

Should You Be Concerned About the Smell of Natural Latex?

A mild rubber-like or sweet scent from new latex is expected and isn't, on its own, an indication that something is wrong with the mattress.

It's also important to set realistic expectations. Natural latex isn't an odourless material. If you expect a new natural latex mattress to have absolutely no scent, you may be surprised when you first unpack it.

For most sleepers, the initial scent becomes considerably less noticeable as the mattress airs out. Once the latex is enclosed in its mattress cover and covered with normal bedding, it generally fades into the background.

If you're considering a latex mattress because you want to avoid the characteristic chemical smell associated with some conventional foams, understanding this difference is helpful: latex can have a smell of its own without that smell being the same thing as conventional foam off-gassing.
