What Is a Coir Bunkie Board?
A coir bunkie board is a low-profile mattress support made from compressed coconut fibre. Unlike a conventional solid bunkie board, coir has an open, fibrous structure that provides support while allowing air to circulate underneath the mattress.
At approximately 1 inch thick, it adds very little height to the finished bed while creating a more consistent surface between the mattress and the foundation underneath.
Better Support for Latex Mattresses
Latex mattresses are heavy and flexible, which makes the foundation underneath particularly important. For our latex mattresses, bed slats should be no more than 3 inches apart, and slat width should be within approximately 1/2 inch of the spacing between the slats.
When an otherwise suitable bed frame has gaps that are too large, a coir bunkie board can help create a more supportive surface without requiring you to replace the entire frame.
The firm coconut fibre helps distribute the mattress over the slatted foundation while retaining the airflow that is important underneath a mattress.
Support Without Sacrificing Airflow
Solid boards such as plywood can reduce airflow underneath a mattress. Coir provides an alternative by combining firmness with a naturally open structure.
This makes coir particularly well suited to latex sleep systems, where both proper foundation support and ventilation are important.
A coir bunkie board can be used with many platform beds and slatted frames, making it a simple way to improve an existing foundation while adding only about an inch to the overall bed height.
